What do you know about rhenium?
Rhenium is a rare, dense metal. It’s resistant to corrosion and oxidation and has one of the highest melting points of all the elements. Density-wise, it’s one of the most dense elements, exceeded only by iridium, osmium and platinum. Even though it’s so dense, it’s actually quite ductile and malleable.
There are five major refractory metals (defined by high resistance to heat and wear) and rhenium is one of them. Quite rare, it wasn’t really “discovered” until the early Twentieth Century thanks to an X-ray analysis of platinum ores/columbite where trace amounts were detected.
Is Rhenium rare? Definitely. It doesn’t occur freely in nature and it doesn’t exist as a compound. It is, međutim, widely spread throughout the Earth’s crust at about 0.001 ppm.
Did you know that commercial rhenium is typically obtained as a byproduct of refining molybdenum and copper? And that rhenium is used as an alloying agent in both tungsten and molybdenum? It’s also used for flash lamps (for photography) as well as for filaments in mass spectrographs and ion gauges. Since it can withstand high temperatures and oxidizing, rhenium makes a good addition to superalloys used in gas-turbine engines and jet-engine parts.
